Chronology "Joggeli" 1952 to 1998
1952
In light of the World Cup 1954 in Switzerland the city grants the construction of the St. Jakob Stadium with a capacity of 51,500 seats. The project does not get support from the voters of the city of Basel, the referendum is accepted only by a small majority of 19,694 to 18,787.
| 1952 |
Following the plebiscite a stadium co-operative is founded that is put in charge of projecting the construction and guaranteeing the financing of the football stadium St. Jakob. Ernst Thommen, director of the Sport Toto Company, is voted as first president of the co-operative. His place is later taken by "Regierungsrat" Edmund Wyss, a senior official of Basel.
| 1954 |
After a construction phase of around twelve months, the new stadium, dubbed "Joggeli", is inaugurated on April 25th with the Switzerland-Germany match that 51,000 spectators attend. The stadium's first tenant is the tradition-steeped FC Concordia Basel (1st Amateur League). FC Basel subleases from "Congeli".
1954
At the World Cup 1954, 6 matches are played at the Joggeli, amongst others: Germany versus Austria (58,000 spectators) and Germany versus Hungary (56,000 spectators).
1965
The FC Basel trains at the "Joggeli" with coach Helmut Benthaus.
1967
The FC Basel spends its first season at the Joggeli. The Landhof Stadium can no longer accommodate the increasing number of spectators. For the first time more than 50,000 spectators attend a championship match (FC Basel versus FC Lugano).
1994
The 45,000 spectators at the FC Basel - FC Zürich match break the record for spectators at a National League B match.
| 1995 |
The stadium is ageing. At the same time the Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA) is continually issuing stricter rules and regulations for international matches. It soon becomes clear that a renovation would be too costly.
| 1997 |
A new construction project is given green light. The main contractor, Marazzi AG from Bern, seeks investors and tenants. In addition Basel star architects J. Herzog & P. de Meuron are brought in.
| 1998 |
13th December: Farewell to the old Joggeli. The last match is fought out by FC Basel and FC Lugano. 36,000 spectators attend the game.
